It was last month.
A senior colleague of mine in Sendai (a leading figure in the bicycle shop world) sent me a message.
A young man who is traveling around Japan is going there, so please take care of him.
A traveler, eh?
We at MASAYA love that kind of thing.
He followed up with another line.
“Please change the chain and sprocket. I’m on my way to Okinawa.”
No, wait, Okinawa?
Isn’t that really far south? (LOL).
I was skeptical, wondering if he was really coming, so I just stood by with the parts.
Actually, MASAYA, for some reason, is like an inn town where travelers often stop by.
Just yesterday, I received a message from a French couple who had bought a bicycle at MASAYA and were traveling around Japan.
“We’re on Sado Island!
We just received a report from a French couple who bought a bike from MASAYA and are traveling around Japan.
So, about a month later.
Here he is, the Japan-around-the-Japan boy!
Akiba-kun (a.k.a. Akki) is a very serious young man, which is rare these days.
He came to our store with his beloved car, which was a bit tired after traveling halfway around Japan.
While we were inspecting and servicing the car, we asked him about his travels and his plans for the day.
When we asked him about his plans for today, he replied
“I’m going to ride to Shingu, take a bath, and sleep in the park.
…Hey, heavy rain is forecast for tonight!
And Shingu is only about 20 km away.
If that’s the case, I propose the MASAYA-style hospitality course.
Course 1: Go to Hakata Onsen on foot!
Course 2: Satisfy your appetite at the famous motsunabe restaurant “Yamanaka!
Course 3: Camp under the eaves of Shoya!
With your kind permission, I’ll change my plans!
Ritsu Akki is so honest that it brings tears to my eyes.
By the way, the couple tourists who had pitched their tent under the eaves of Shoya a few months ago are now cycling through Tibet,
They are now cycling in Tibet.
The world is a big place.
And bicycles are free.
I want to go there too…
No, I want to go now!
So today, too, MASAYA welcomes travelers.
Whether you need a chain change, shelter from the rain, or advice on what to eat for dinner.
Bicycles, people, a few encounters, and kindness are all intersecting at MASAYA today.
